Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Musalia Mudavadi, announced the decision after talks in Moscow with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

He said the agreement means Kenyans will no longer be enlisted into Russia’s armed forces through official channels.

The issue has sparked concern in Kenya, where authorities say hundreds of citizens may have been recruited to fight in the conflict.

Some recruits claim they were misled, travelling abroad for what they believed were civilian jobs, only to end up in military roles.

Kenyan officials say they have shut down more than 600 recruitment agencies accused of sending citizens overseas under false pretences.

The government is also working to bring affected nationals home, with at least 27 already repatriated and receiving support.

The development comes amid growing scrutiny across Africa over the recruitment of foreign fighters into the Ukraine war.
