The 2024 tender, now cancelled, was awarded to businessman Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, who is suspected of links to organised crime. Fifteen people, including a dozen police officers, have also been charged on corruption suspicions.
Masemola has been summoned to appear in court on April 21, though the exact charges against him have not yet been disclosed. President Cyril Ramaphosa said he had “noted” the court proceedings and will act in accordance with the law, emphasizing the need for a stable police force.
The scandal has exposed wider corruption, including past allegations at Tembisa Hospital, where billions of rands were allegedly misappropriated, a probe linked to the 2021 murder of whistleblower Babita Deokaran.
The case continues to dominate South African headlines, highlighting concerns over accountability and criminal influence within the police.
