The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) says 83 children have been killed and 254 injured in the past week in Lebanon as fighting between Hezbollah and Israel intensifies.
According to UNICEF’s regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, Edouard Beigbeder, the escalating violence has forced nearly 700,000 people, including about 200,000 children, to flee their homes.
Israeli airstrikes have hit several areas across Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, triggering evacuations in many communities and worsening the humanitarian situation.
Beigbeder said more than 10 children have been killed each day over the past week, with about 36 injured daily, highlighting the severe toll the conflict is taking on young people.
UNICEF reports that over the last 28 months, at least 412 children have been killed and more than 1,600 injured in Lebanon.
The agency warned that continued strikes are placing children at extreme risk, with thousands of families now living in crowded shelters after fleeing their homes.
UNICEF has called on all parties involved to protect civilians, schools, and shelters, and to respect international humanitarian law while taking urgent steps to reduce the violence.
