The number of people killed in Kenya's heavy floods has gone up to over 40 since Friday, after days of intense rain caused flash floods in different parts of the country.
According to authorities, 26 of those deaths happened in the capital, Nairobi. In low-lying areas and informal settlements, floodwaters swept through homes and swept away vehicles as rivers broke their banks.
Across the country, the scene is much the same. Roads have turned into rivers, stranding commuters and cutting off entire communities.
Rescue teams are still searching for people and helping those trapped in the city and nearby areas.
Public Service and Special Programs Minister, Geoffrey Ruku who confirmed the rising death toll says the government has sent emergency teams to help affected communities.
Ruku also announced that the government will pay hospital bills for those injured in the floods and cover burial costs for families who lost loved ones. Officials say this help is meant to ease the pain and financial burden on families hit by the disaster.
