Twenty-year-old Chinonso Jeremiah Obi, who plays for FK Dainava, was reportedly stabbed on Tuesday while his team was preparing for a league fixture.

Authorities say a suspect has been arrested, with officials describing the incident as racially motivated.

The Lithuanian Football Federation condemned the attack, calling it a clear act of racism and stressing that such behaviour has no place in football.

Following the incident, the match between Dainava and Tauras was postponed as the player receives treatment.

Federation president Edgaras Stankevičius reaffirmed the need to ensure safety for all players, regardless of nationality.

The attack has raised fresh concerns about the safety of foreign players in European leagues, amid ongoing reports of racial abuse targeting African footballers.
