The France military has launched a new training programme for African forces focused on environmental protection in Gabon.

The exercises, organised by the Academy for the Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources, bring together military teams from eight African countries, including Benin, Cameroon, and Ghana.

Participants are undergoing field training and workshops aimed at tackling challenges such as illegal mining, deforestation, and the protection of vulnerable ecosystems.

The initiative reflects a shift in France’s military strategy in Africa, moving away from permanent bases toward capacity-building and technical support.

Organisers say the programme is designed to strengthen cooperation among countries facing similar environmental threats across borders.

Officials also stress that the training combines both French and African experience to deliver practical, operational solutions.

The programme is expected to enhance regional efforts to address environmental crimes and improve long-term security collaboration.
