Former Nigeria national football team coach Adegboye Onigbinde has died at the age of 88.
His family confirmed his passing on Monday in a statement signed by Bolade Adesuyi, describing him as a respected football coach, family man, and community leader from Modakeke.
The family thanked God for what they called a fulfilled life and praised his contributions to Nigerian football and the country. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Onigbinde coached Nigeria at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea. He had earlier managed the team—then known as the Green Eagles—between 1982 and 1984.
In 1984, he guided Nigeria to the final of the 1984 African Cup of Nations, where they finished runners-up after losing to Cameroon national football team.
Beyond coaching, Onigbinde also served as a technical instructor for FIFA and the Confederation of African Football, helping to develop football across Africa.
