A spokesperson for North Korea’s foreign ministry said the country supports the right of the Iranian people to choose their leadership. The remarks were reported by the state-run Korean Central News Agency.
Iran recently named Mojtaba Khamenei as its new supreme leader after the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike on February 28.
Pyongyang, which has long had strained relations with Washington, previously condemned the US-Israeli strike on Iran and described it as an unlawful act.
In its latest statement, the North Korean official accused Washington and Tel Aviv of damaging peace and security in the Middle East and contributing to global instability.
The spokesperson also claimed the two countries were interfering in Iran’s political system and trying to weaken its government.
Meanwhile, the United States has for many years led international efforts to limit North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme. These efforts have included sanctions, diplomatic pressure, and high-level meetings, though progress has been limited.
In recent months, the administration of President Donald Trump has tried to restart talks with Pyongyang. Discussions have included the possibility of another meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year.
During a trip to Asia in October, Trump said he was open to meeting Kim again. After several months without a response, Kim recently indicated that relations between the two countries could improve if Washington recognised North Korea as a nuclear state.
