Earlier in the day, the organisation had already assisted forty-one migrants in a separate rescue at sea.

Those rescued in the latest operation were from several African countries, including Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, South Sudan, Guinea, The Gambia, and Sudan.

Rescue teams were alerted after the boats were spotted in international waters within the Libyan Search and Rescue Zone.

The migrants are now being transported to Civitavecchia aboard the NGO’s Life Support rescue ship, a journey expected to take several days.

The incident is part of a steady flow of migrants attempting the dangerous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea, many fleeing conflict, poverty, or instability in search of better opportunities in the European Union.
