The incident happened on Saturday inside the heavily protected Green Zone in central Baghdad. The Green Zone is the area where many government offices and foreign embassies are located.
According to Iraqi security officials, the missile landed within the embassy compound and caused smoke to rise from part of the building. A security source also said the attack damaged part of the embassy’s air defence system, although further details were not provided.
Videos shared on social media showed thick smoke coming from the area shortly after the strike.
Authorities have not yet confirmed if anyone was injured or the full extent of the damage.
The United States Embassy in Baghdad has not released an official statement about the incident.
Security officials say this is the second time the embassy has been targeted since the start of the ongoing conflict in the region.
