Will Packer Confirms the Sequel of a ‘Girls Trip’
After almost five years, Will Packer has confirmed that a sequel to the box-office hit.
Back in 2017, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Regina Hall, and Tiffany Haddish had ladies all over ready to gather up their crews to go on girls’ trips to the destinations of their choice. Now it looks like the ladies will be reuniting again for the film’s sequel.
In an interview with Michael Strahan for Good Morning America, Will Packer, the producer of the film, confirmed that a second film is in the works. “The ‘Girls Trip 2’ sequel, we are underway,” he said. “We are absolutely in the stages, the ladies are in, I just talked to the director.”
Will continued, “Now it’s just about what kind of trip do we take, right? Post-pandemic with all our favorite crazy ladies, what do we do with them? That’s what we got to figure out.”
The first film dropped in July 2017 and focused on a group of friends who reunited for the first time in years after drifting apart. They attend the annual Essence Festival in New Orleans, which not only created new memories for them but also reminded them of the true meaning of friendship and sisterhood.
The film, which was written by Tracy Oliver and Kenya Barris, earned millions at the box office and landed the cast multiple awards. Including awards from the NAACP Image Awards, MTV Movie & TV Awards, the African-American Film Critics Association, as well as other events.
As previously reported, talks about a sequel first happened shortly after the film’s release. Back in September 2017, Will Packer made mention of the cast talking about doing a second film. At that time he said, “We’re definitely talking about it.
The only thing harder than opening a studio comedy today is opening a studio comedy sequel. That’s the next challenge. I love our team. If anybody can do it, we can do it. It’s still a little early the movie is still in theaters but it’s something we’ve all thought about.”
