Viola Davis received her first Grammy award on Sunday, February 5, for her reading of the audiobook version of her autobiography, “Finding Me.”

Viola Davis has received her first Grammy award on Sunday February 5, for her reading of the audiobook version of her autobiography, “Finding Me,” thus making her the third Black woman in history to earn the prestigious EGOT title.

“It has just been such a journey,” Davis said excitedly while accepting her Grammy award. “I just EGOT! Oh, my God. I wrote this book to honor the 6-year-old Viola, to honor her, to honor her life, her joy, her trauma, her everything.”

“EGOT” stands for “Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony” throughout the course of a career. She has already won an Emmy, two Tony Awards, an Oscar and now a Grammy. At the moment, only 18 persons have achieved this feat. Davis has now joined Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend, and Jennifer Hudson as the fourth Black person to hold the coveted title.

Considering her career and Grammy nomination, Davis stated in a January interview with the Recording Academy that becoming an EGOT would be a “big accomplishment.”
