TikTok Sets 60-Minute Daily Screen Time Limit For Under-18s
TikTok has announced a 60-minute daily screen time limit for users who are aged under 18.
In a blog post on Wednesday, the social media platform said the new development will help teenagers manage their time on TikTok.
“Today we’re announcing new features for teens, families, and our broader community. We believe digital experiences should bring joy and play a positive role in how people express themselves, discover ideas, and connect,” said Cormac Keenan, head of trust and safety at TikTok.
“We’re improving our screen time tool with more custom options, introducing new default settings for teen accounts, and expanding Family Pairing with more parental controls.”
The default setting will also require a passcode to continue scrolling through the app once the time limit is hit.
Teens are believed to opt out of the feature if they want. Profiles owned by users aged 13 to 15 will also be set to private automatically. TikTok did not confirm an exact date for the new features to be rolled out but it said it is expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
The decision comes as the China-owned video app faces increased scrutiny in Washington over security concerns.
The Canadian government recently banned the app from government devices — following similar moves in the United States.
