Shops keep doors shut as protests intensify in Kenya
Kenyan opposition organized nationwide protests on July 19 to demand President William Ruto’s government lower the cost of living and repeal new taxes. Demonstrators hoped to bring about change, but the protests negatively impacted businesses and the economy, costing an estimated three billion shillings ($21.8 million) per day.
Some urged for dialogue between the government and opposition to end the protests. President Ruto, who campaigned to lower prices, has faced criticism for not fulfilling promises. The protests resulted in at least 12 people being wounded.
