Rooney’s Son Signs Contract with Manchester United
Wayne Rooney’s oldest son Kai has signed a youth contract with Manchester United, with the Red Devils’ record scorer revealing his pride at seeing the youngster join his old club.
The 35-year-old spent 13 years at Old Trafford, breaking their goalscoring record and winning the Premier League title on five occasions – as well as the Champions League – before returning to boyhood club Everton. But Rooney’s affiliation with United will continue after son Kai, 11, put pen to paper on a contract with the Red Devils on Thursday.
Rooney senior posted a selection of pictures with Kai and wife Coleen as United unveiled their latest recruit and he could not hide his delight at seeing his son follow in his footsteps.
‘Proud day,’ he wrote on Instagram. ‘Kai signing for Manchester United. Keep up the hard work son.’ Dad-of-four Rooney has showcased Kai’s football talent several times in the past and he was previously on the books of United’s rivals Manchester City.
Kai, who left City when his dad moved to MLS in the United States, has been seen running training drills with a personal coach and was videoed scoring an outrageous free-kick that would have made his father proud. Wayne was only a few years older than Kai when he made his breakthrough as a 16-year-old for Everton, joining United a couple of years later.
In 2017 he became the club’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing the record of 249 goals long held by Bobby Charlton. Rooney is currently the player-manager of Championship side Derby County and perhaps one day he might even end up managing Kai at United. His three other sons, Kay, Kit and Cass, are also thought be as football mad as their father.
