Rafael Nadal has tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival in Spain after making his comeback from injury in an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi last week, the Spaniard said on Monday.

The 35-year-old shared a post to his Instagram, writing in Spanish:

“I wanted to announce that on my return home after playing the Abu Dhabi tournament, I had tested positive for COVID … when I arrived in Spain.

“I am having some unpleasant moments but I hope that I will improve little by little. I am now homebound and have reported the result to those who have been in contact with me.”

Nadal said he will “analyse options” on future tournaments “depending on the outcome”.

It comes following doubt about Novak Djokovic’s participation in January’s Australian Open, with organisers stipulating that all players must be vaccinated to participate in the tournament.

Roger Federer has also confirmed he is unlikely to compete in the competition, due to knee surgery.
