Parliament passes NACOC Bill to allow cannabis cultivation for industrial and medicinal purposes
Ghana’s parliament has passed the Narcotics Control Commission Bill, 2023, granting the Ministry of Interior the authority to issue licenses for cannabis cultivation. This significant achievement follows the Supreme Court’s ruling that deemed a section of the law unconstitutional, which had previously allowed the Minister to grant licenses for cannabis cultivation.
The new amendment empowers the Minister to authorize the controlled cultivation of cannabis with low THC content, opening avenues for its industrial uses, such as fiber and seed production, as well as regulated exploration of its medicinal properties. This legislative milestone is expected to establish a well-regulated cannabis industry in Ghana, ensuring adherence to strict guidelines and quality standards.
