The organizers of the 2024 Olympic Games unveiled the torch that will carry the Olympic flame around France. Designed by Mathieu Lehanneur, a French designer, the torch is made of sleek recycled steel and inspired by the symbols of Equality, Water, and Peacefulness, representing the upcoming Games.

It has a champagne-colored finish, is tapered at both ends, and is being produced in limited numbers (2000 torches) to conserve resources, which is five times fewer than previous editions of the Games.

Each torch weighs 1.5 kilograms and stands 70 centimeters tall. The journey of the torch will begin in Olympia, Greece, where it will be lit and then transported by boat to Marseille, a city in southern France. The torch relay will start on May 8 from Marseille, with 10,000 torchbearers taking turns to carry it, culminating with the last bearer lighting the cauldron at the Games’ opening ceremony. Notably, the same torch design will be used for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, with an additional 1000 torchbearers carrying it for the Paralympics.

Mathieu Lehanneur, renowned for his designs, expressed his excitement at the opportunity to design the Olympic torch, considering it a mythical object that symbolizes cohesion and sharing. He highlighted its significance in the Games, as it travels thousands of kilometers, passed from person to person, on land and sea. This time, for Paris 2024, the torch’s design embodies perfect symmetry, emphasizing the theme of equality.
