Young Kenyan doctor Jemimah Kariuki has won an award from the World Health Organization (WHO) in recognition of her contribution “to advancing global health”.

Last year, she helped create a service called Wheels for Life that provided free transportation during the coronavirus curfew for pregnant women who needed to get to hospital.

At the time, the crackdown by police on those who flouted the curfew meant that many women were too afraid to seek medical attention.

On Twitter, Dr Kariuki thanked the WHO for the Director-General’s Award for Global Health and praised her colleagues.

“For the young in society this shows that you can make it,” she added.
