Historic Ethiopian cabaret club saved from demolition
Fendika, the last remaining historic Azmari Bet (cabaret club) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has been saved from demolition. The venue, known for hosting performances by Azmari musicians, is now a cultural center featuring a mix of traditional Ethiopian music, Ethio-jazz, and more.
Under the ownership of Melaku Belay since 2008, Fendika has become a unique place to discover Ethiopian culture, bridging traditions and bringing people together. The council’s initial plan to replace the venue with a luxury hotel was reversed, allowing Fendika to continue its legacy and opening the possibility for expansion in the future.
