Former FLOTUS Michelle Obama Wants To Register One Million New Voters before Mid – Term Elections
Former FLOTUS Michelle Obama is on a mission to get the masses out to vote ahead of the mid-term elections. In a published letter titled “Fight For Our Vote”, she shared on her Twitter feed, she announced that she would be forming a coalition with her organisation, When We All Vote, to get people to the polls.
In 2020, millions made their voices heard at the polls. But now, folks who oppose that progress are making it harder to vote. That’s why I’m asking you to join @WhenWeAllVote and 30 other organisations to turn out more voters and urge Congress to pass voting rights legislation. pic.twitter.com/hwgyyuTGy9
In the letter, Obama also references the Jan. 6th attack on the Capitol Building last year as part of the inspiration to form the coalition.
“One year ago, we witnessed an unprecedented assault on our Capitol and our democracy,” she writes in the letter. “From Georgia and Florida to Iowa and Texas, states passed laws designed to make it harder for Americans to vote. And in other state legislatures across the nation, lawmakers have attempted to do the same.”
Obama went on to say that the coalition would compromise at least 100,000 volunteers who will be working together to contact their state senators to urge them to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
She also emphasised that the coalition will be recruiting lawyers in addition to volunteers to get more people to the polls in order “to protect voters in the states where the freedom to vote is threatened.”
