Millwall supporters booed the players for taking the knee in support of Black Lives Matter after returning to The Den for the first time in eight months on Saturday.

Two-thousand supporters are allowed to watch their Championship clash against Derby County inside the stadium as the area is in Tier 2 of the Government’s coronavirus restrictions.

Players and staff from Premier League clubs continue to honour the Black Lives Matter movement before the start of every game in a bid raise awareness of racism.

But as players from Millwall and Derby County bent down on one knee moments before kick-off on Saturday, loud boos and jeers from the Millwall fans could clearly be heard around the ground.

Before the game, Millwall’s manager Gary Rowett and the players had released a statement which insisted that they would continue to honour the Black Lives Matter movement, despite potential backlash from supporters when they return to the stadium.

QPR’s director of football, Les Ferdinand, has said that the Black Lives Matter movement in football had ‘reached a point of “good PR” but little more than that’.

The former Newcastle United and Tottenham striker added: ‘Taking the knee was very powerful but we feel that impact has now been diluted.
