Alicia Keys Pardons Lil Mama for Crashing Her Performance with Jay-Z
One of the most memorable moments from the 2009 Video Music Awards was Lil Mama jumping on stage with Alicia Keys and Jay-Z while they performed their hit song “Empire State of Mind.” Keys recently spoke out about it and she is showing nothing but love to Lil Mama.
While on The Morning Hustle Show, Keys opened up about Lil Mama’s viral moment, “Listen, to this day, I truly never knew she was even on the stage — that’s the craziest part of the whole thing for me. I was on that stage, Jay was in the middle, she was on the other side of Jay and I never saw her. Never.”
She continued, “So umm, that was wild to me. But I absolutely — it’s not even a statement. That was then. You know, she’s from New York, too. You know, I think she really felt the energy of the record and she loved it and she couldn’t hold herself back. Look, this is what my music does to people. What can we say?”
Lil Mama has apologized and said her career was impacted by the viral moment, but it hasn’t stopped her from seeking controversy. Earlier this year, she made news after saying she will start a heterosexual rights movement against “bullying” from queer people.
