In a thrilling conclusion to the 2024 Paris Olympics, the United States and China have ended their fierce competition for gold medals in a tie. After 16 days of intense athletic contests, both nations have secured an impressive 40 gold medals each.
The final tally saw the United States lead in the total medal count with 126 medals (40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze). China followed closely with 91 medals (40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze). This tie in gold medals highlights a remarkable level of competition between the two global sports powerhouses.
As the Games neared their end, the U.S. entered the final day trailing China by one gold medal (38 to 39). China managed to secure an early gold on the last day as Li Wenwen clinched victory in the women’s +81kg weightlifting category. However, the U.S. quickly responded with a gold of its own as Jennifer Valente successfully defended her title in the women’s omnium cycling track event.
The decisive moment came in the women’s basketball final, which traditionally concludes the Summer Olympics. The U.S. women’s basketball team secured a narrow 67-66 victory, earning their eighth consecutive gold medal in the sport and leveling the gold medal count with China.
On the final day of the Olympics, Team USA also garnered a total of five medals. In addition to the basketball gold, the U.S. won a gold in women’s cycling omnium, a silver in women’s freestyle 76kg wrestling, a team silver in women’s volleyball, and a bronze in men’s water polo.
The medal count shift on the final day saw the bronze total for the U.S. decrease by one. This change occurred after the International Gymnastics Federation and the International Olympic Committee ruled that Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal in the women’s floor final would be awarded to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu following an international arbitration court decision.
Reflecting on the 2024 Games, the U.S.’s total medal count of 126 is notable. It ranks as the third highest in Olympic history for the U.S., trailing only behind the 174 medals won in Los Angeles 1984. This performance bodes well as the United States prepares to host the next Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
