British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak congratulated Nigeria’s new president-elect, Bola Tinubu, on his victory.

On Wednesday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak congratulated Nigeria’s new president-elect, Bola Tinubu, on his victory in an election disputed by opposition parties there.

“The UK-Nigeria relationship remains strong. I look forward to working together to grow our security and trade ties, opening up opportunities for businesses and creating prosperity in both our countries,” Sunak said on Twitter.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr Tinubu was declared winner of Saturday’s presidential election by chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu. He was given certificate of return by INEC later in the day.

Mr Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, winning 12 of 36 states of Nigeria.

Mr Abubakar came second, polling 6,984,520 votes, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party came third, polling 6,101,533 votes.
