A tragic courtroom incident in Nairobi has left Kenya in mourning as Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti succumbed to injuries sustained from a shooting by a senior police officer. The country’s chief justice, Martha K. Koome, confirmed the news on Saturday, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures within the judiciary.
Justice Koome shared the heartbreaking news on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that I inform the nation that Hon. Monica Kivuti, Principal Magistrate, Makadara Law Courts has lost the fight against the extensive injuries sustained during an open gun attack in Court.”
The shooting occurred on Thursday when Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, a senior police officer, opened fire inside the courtroom after Magistrate Kivuti canceled bail for his wife, who was accused of receiving money under false pretenses. Kipruto was subsequently shot dead by other officers on the scene. Three officers were injured during the attack but are currently in stable condition.
According to a source at Nairobi Hospital, Ms. Kivuti, who suffered gunshot wounds to her chest and leg, passed away on Friday night.
The attack has sent shockwaves throughout Kenya, a country where such violent incidents within the courtroom are unprecedented. The judiciary has vowed to bolster security measures to protect judicial staff and court users. The Law Society of Kenya highlighted the incident as part of a concerning trend of increasing threats against judicial officers.
“This tragic event underscores the highly emotive nature of legal disputes and the risks faced by judicial officers and advocates,” stated the Law Society. They committed to collaborating with Justice Koome to develop strategies to safeguard the justice system and its practitioners.
The national police service has launched an investigation into the shooting, with initial findings indicating that Kipruto had entered the court for reasons unknown at the time of the hearing. The Makadara Law Courts will remain closed until Monday as the investigation continues.
This incident has sparked a nationwide dialogue about the safety of judicial officers and the importance of security within the judiciary. As Kenyans grieve the loss of Magistrate Kivuti, there is a collective call for justice and enhanced protection for those who serve in the legal system.
