One of Australia’s leading stage and screen actors, Noni Hazlehurst, has thrown her support behind a new plan for a post-COVID-19 arts recovery, accusing the federal government of “waging a culture war” that combined with the novel coronavirus is devastating creative industries.

On Monday the Greens are due to announce a three-part rescue package dubbed “Create Australia”, which they will lobby other political parties to adopt and implement.

The package, developed in consultation with leading arts organisations, includes a $300 million project to put an “artist in residence” in every school and library, a $1 billion Australian content fund to kickstart the country’s screen industry, and a $1 billion fund for new events and productions in the festival, music and live performance sector.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said the cash value was small in comparison with the government’s overall COVID-19 response, and it was desperately needed.
