Senegal’s Foreign Minister, Yassine Fall, met with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday, aiming to bolster ties between the two nations. The discussions marked a notable effort to enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors, reflecting a deepening of Senegal-Russia relations.

During the joint news conference, Fall outlined the key areas of collaboration that both countries are targeting. She emphasized the mutual interest in expanding partnerships in mineral exploration, energy, agriculture, scientific research, and fisheries. “We hope to see increased engagement between Senegalese and Russian entrepreneurs, with a particular focus on investment opportunities in Senegal,” Fall stated, highlighting the potential for economic growth and development through these collaborations.

Fall also addressed the broader geopolitical concerns that both nations share. She expressed Senegal’s commitment to seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts in the Sahel region and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis. “We have discussed the urgent need to address and reduce terrorist activities in the Sahel, and we advocate for peaceful negotiations to resolve conflicts not only in Ukraine but also in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” Fall added.

The Senegalese Foreign Minister also drew historical parallels, noting the longstanding connections between Africa and Russia. “Reflecting on recent history, it’s clear that our two worlds share a close relationship that dates back to the colonial era and the struggle against apartheid,” she remarked, underscoring the historical context that frames current diplomatic efforts.

The meeting signifies a pivotal moment in strengthening Senegal-Russia relations, with both countries poised to leverage their historical ties and shared interests to foster greater collaboration in the coming years.
