Nigeria has confirmed cases of anthrax, a bacterial disease that affects animals and humans, with symptoms including oozing of blood from body openings. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed the cases in Niger State, indicating possible infection from a multi-specie animal farm. Anthrax can spread to humans through handling infected animal products. It has different forms, with pulmonary anthrax having the highest mortality rate.

Gastrointestinal anthrax can occur from consuming infected meat, while cutaneous anthrax enters the body through cuts or scrapes. Inhalation is common among those processing animal hides. Previous anthrax outbreaks have been reported worldwide, causing fatalities.
