Michael Jordan’s Last Dance Sneakers Break Record for Most Expensive Sold
The black and red sneakers were sported by Jordan during his 37-point performance for the Chicago Bulls against the Utah Jazz in Game 2 of the finals.
Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan 13 sneakers, worn during the second game of the 1998 NBA finals, have broken the record as the most expensive sneakers ever sold, after fetching over $2.2 million (£1.8 million) at auction.
The black and red trainers, also known as “Bred,” were worn by Jordan during his final year with the Chicago Bulls, famously referred to as “The Last Dance.”
The sneakers were part of Sotheby’s Victoriam collection, which showcases curated sports memorabilia from past and present athletes.
The sneakers surpassed the previous auction record of $1.8m (£1.45 million) held by Kanye West’s Nike Air Yeezy 1s. Jordan’s sports memorabilia has always been highly sought after and valuable at auction.
In September 2022, Sotheby’s sold his jersey from the first game of the 1998 NBA finals for $10.1m (£8.1m), setting a new record for the most expensive game-worn sports memorabilia ever sold at auction.
Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectibles, stated that this record-breaking result further proves the demand for Michael Jordan sports memorabilia continues to outperform all expectations.
