Man Utd ‘agreed Ousmane Dembele transfer
Manchester United had reportedly agreed a deal with Barcelona for the transfer of winger Ousmane Dembele on deadline day, before the player refused the move at the eleventh hour.
A report by France Football revealed that United were all set to welcome the 23-year-old to Old Trafford, having agreed terms at club level with the Spanish giants.
The move would have allowed Barca to move for Lyon forward Memphis Depay, who would have been replaced at the French side by Leicester City ‘s Islam Slimani.
At 6pm on October 5th, just five hours before the transfer deadline, the relevant documents were ‘sent to the various players to be transferred to their respective future clubs’.
However, at 8pm ‘the axe fell’ as Dembele informed Barcelona that he had no intention to leave, preventing all three deals from being completed.
Boss Ronald Koeman was said to have been ‘upset’ by the Frenchman’s decision, telling him that he should prepare for a ‘tough’ season at the Nou Camp.
United considered Dembele to be a suitable alternative to primary target Jadon Sancho, and turned their attention to him when it became apparent that a deal for the Borussia Dortmund star was out of the question.
Their interest in Sancho was one of the main talking points throughout the transfer window, but a move failed to materialise after the German side reportedly rejected all offers for his services.
The Red Devils welcomed Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri and Edinson Cavani during the summer, as well as securing a deal for Atalanta starlet Amad Traore to join the club in January.
United kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign this evening as they take on PSG away from home, before a tough test in the Premier League on Saturday against Chelsea at Old Trafford.
