Kenyans’ Complain Over Breach of Data for Political Party Registration
The Kenyan authorities are asking citizens registered as belonging to political parties without their consent to report the issue.
Many people on social media have been expressing their anger over the past week after finding out – on the government’s e-Citizen portal – that their personal details have been used to register them to political parties without their knowledge.
The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties page on the portal has since been deactivated with a notification that the service has been discontinued “to factor in valuable feedback that the office has received”.
They recently set up the Office of the Data Commissioner and said it had already received more than 200 complaints from aggrieved people – and called for others to come forward if they wanted to be deregistered.
In a statement, the agency also said it was working with other agencies to ensure compliance with data protection laws.
