John Terry Criticises Andreas Christensen After Draw With Aston Villa
John Terry has no sympathy for Andreas Christensen following Chelsea’s draw with Aston Villa on Monday evening. Olivier Giroud’s goal in the first half had given Chelsea the lead before Anwar El Ghazi equalised for Villa in the 50th minute.
But Chelsea’s players were unhappy with the build up to Villa’s leveller after Christensen stayed on the ground following a collision with Jack Grealish. The Denmark international remained on the turf clutching his knee while Villa carried on with their attack and eventually scored as El Ghazi met Matty Cash’s cross from the right flank and steered the ball through Edouard Mendy’s legs.
After the match, one fan told Terry on Instagram that he should be ‘raging’ with Villa’s equaliser following their refusal to put the ball out of play while Christensen appeared to be injured on the floor. But Terry, who spent 13 years as Chelsea’s captain, simply replied: ‘He [Christensen] should have got up.’
Meanwhile, Frank Lampard admits Chelsea should not have been awarded a foul for Grealish’s collision with Christensen. ‘In terms of the Grealish incident, I haven’t seen it again, but I didn’t feel there was much in it at the time, I’m not sure whether it was a foul or not,’ said the Chelsea manager. ‘I was just concerned as soon as Andreas stayed down that the ball was going to go into our box and we’d be a man down, which turned out to be the case.’
Elsewhere, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright also agrees with Terry over Christensen’s decision to stay down on the floor during Villa’s attack. ‘I’m very disappointed there with Christensen because we see Jack Grealish get up here and it’s not a knock that’s going to make him have to leave the game,’ Wright told Premier League Productions. ‘I don’t want to see my centre-half lying on the floor like that when you know nothing is wrong with you. ‘You can see all the problems it’s caused. Kante should’ve got back quicker, maybe [Cesar] Azpilicueta could’ve been a little bit more aware but he’s worried about Jack Grealish and in the end they score the goal.
‘They deservedly score the goal but my problem with this is he [Christensen] gets up and he plays on so I believe if Grealish can get up and play on, he should play on as well. ‘Then you look at Grealish, he occupies Azpilicueta, then it’s Kante, we’re talking about one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and his awareness of where El Ghazi was and the awareness that the other centre-half wasn’t in there baffled me that he didn’t recognise that situation.’
