The House of World Cultures in Berlin reopened on the weekend of June 4th, 2023, with a focus on showcasing non-European cultures. As part of the program, a Fulani dinner was included, highlighting the culinary and cultural traditions of the Fulani people.

The Fulani are one of the largest nomadic groups in West Africa, with an estimated population of 20 million. Chef Fatmata Binta, a Sierra Leone native based in Ghana, serves as the ambassador for Fulani cuisine and culture. She owns a nomadic restaurant called ‘Dine on a Mat,’ which aims to introduce Fulani cuisine to a global audience.

Chef Fatmata Binta sees gastronomy as a powerful tool for driving positive change in her community. By championing Fulani cuisine, she addresses issues she cares about while showcasing the richness and sustainability of Fulani culture.

The Fulani culture has a long history and has been passed down through generations for hundreds of years. Their lifestyle is considered sustainable, as they prioritize minimalism and preservation of resources, even in their food practices. Chef Binta believes that the world can learn valuable lessons from the Fulani approach to consumption and preservation.

Chef Binta has been actively promoting West African ingredients, including the locally known delicacy Fonio. Her next Dine on a Mat event is planned for Rabat, Morocco, further spreading awareness and appreciation for Fulani cuisine and culture.
