The iconic Mirage Hotel and Casino on the famed Las Vegas Strip has officially closed its doors today after an illustrious 34-year run. The closure marks the end of an era for one of the Strip’s most beloved resorts, renowned for its tropical theme and innovative attractions.

The Mirage, which opened its doors in 1989 under the vision of casino magnate Steve Wynn, was celebrated with a farewell event that culminated a week-long celebration. Gamblers were given the chance to win a share of a $1.6 million cash prize in accordance with Nevada state law. The resort announced its impending closure in May, preparing its patrons for the bittersweet farewell.

A Landmark Transformation

Following today’s closure, the Mirage will undergo a significant transformation. The extensive three-year renovation project will see the iconic 3,000-room resort completely rebranded, erasing all traces of its former tropical theme. When it reopens in 2027, it will be known as Hard Rock Las Vegas. The centerpiece of this redevelopment will be a towering 700-foot-tall hotel designed in the shape of a guitar, reminiscent of Hard Rock’s flagship property in Florida. Unfortunately, this transformation means the beloved volcano attraction will be dismantled to make way for additional hotel rooms.

Historical Significance

When the Mirage opened in 1989, it set a new standard for luxury resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. It was the first to feature a sidewalk attraction, the erupting volcano, which quickly became a must-see spectacle. This innovation inspired future developments such as the Bellagio’s dancing fountains and the Venetian’s grand canals, cementing the Mirage’s place in Las Vegas history.

Architects have described the Mirage’s design as an oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the Strip. Paul Steelman, one of the architects behind the project, shared with KSNV-TV, a CNN affiliate, “The tropical design created by Wynn was meant to resemble an oasis in the chaotic Las Vegas Strip. Nowhere in Las Vegas before could you walk in and feel like you were in a beautiful tropical engineered place that made you feel good about yourself.”

Memorable Attractions

Beyond its erupting volcano, the Mirage was home to several quintessential Las Vegas attractions. These included the famed Siegfried and Roy’s white tigers show and a Cirque du Soleil performance set to the music of The Beatles. These attractions drew millions of visitors and added to the resort’s legendary status.

Ownership Changes

In 2000, MGM Resorts acquired the Mirage from Steve Wynn, further enhancing its legacy. In 2022, Hard Rock International purchased the property for over $1 billion, marking the brand’s second foray into the Las Vegas market. Hard Rock previously owned what is now the Virgin Hotel, located off the Strip.

Looking Ahead

As the Mirage closes its doors, the anticipation for Hard Rock Las Vegas builds. This transformation signifies not just the end of an era but the beginning of a new chapter for the Las Vegas Strip, promising to deliver a fresh, modern experience while honoring the legacy of its predecessor.
