Approximately 15,000 doctors in Nigeria are on strike due to poor working conditions and low pay, leading to the closure of public hospitals. The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors states that a large number of doctors are leaving the country for better opportunities abroad, and there are no replacements for them.

The doctors are demanding an increase in the minimum wage, as the current wage is insufficient to meet their needs. With no salary increase since 2009 and a decline in the value of the currency, doctors are worse off financially compared to 15 years ago. Despite advocating and lobbying, the situation remains unresolved, leaving the medical staff with no other options but to strike. The doctor-to-patient ratio in Nigeria is significantly low, with one of the worst doctor staffing levels globally, making access to healthcare challenging for the population.
