In a revealing interview, music legend Celine Dion discussed the drastic steps she took to manage her rare neurological disorder, Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS). The 56-year-old Canadian singer, known for iconic hits like “My Heart Will Go On”, admitted to taking life-threatening doses of diazepam (Valium) to control debilitating muscle spasms and stiffness.
Before her December 2022 diagnosis, Dion’s dependency on Valium escalated as she struggled to perform despite her symptoms. She revealed that she was unaware of the drug’s potentially fatal consequences. At one point, she was taking up to 90 milligrams a day—far beyond safe limits.
Dion’s determination to continue performing was unwavering, even as her husband, Rene Angelil, battled throat cancer. This period saw her pushing through immense personal and physical pain.
Despite canceling her Courage World Tour, Dion remains hopeful about returning to the stage. She has since weaned herself off the medication with the help of doctors and is focusing on recovery.
