Botswana has unveiled a large and white 1,174-carat diamond stone, the second huge precious stone to be unearthed in the country in a month.

The latest diamond was discovered on 12 June by Canadian Diamond firm, Lucara and presented to the country’s cabinet in the capital Gaborone on Wednesday.

The company’s managing director Naseem Lahri said that this was the world’s third largest diamond.

“This is history in the making, for us and Botswana as well,” he said.

Last month, a stone believed to be the third largest – weighing 1,098 carats – was shown to President Mokgweetsi Masisi after the diamond firm, Debswana, unearthed it on 1 June.

President Masisi has shared on Twitter photos of the latest precious stone as it was presented
