Andy Ruiz Jr. changes his prediction for Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury
Former world heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. has outlined how Anthony Joshua can capitalise on Tyson Fury’s “weird style” to beat his fellow Brit.
Joshua and Fury are set to meet in the ring with the undisputed heavyweight championship on the line this summer after signing contracts for the £200million mega-fight.
Bookmakers make undefeated WBC champion Fury an odds-on favourite to clinch victory, while unified champ Joshua – who has a 24-1 professional record – is a firm outsider.
Ruiz Jr. was the man to inflict that sole defeat on the 31-year-old, producing a stunning upset to knock out AJ in the summer of 2019.
The American fighter believes Joshua can take valuable lessons from their Madison Square Garden fight to overcome the odds against the Gypsy King.
“Fury has a really weird style,” Ruiz Jr. told the Daily Mail . “I feel if Joshua doesn’t box around – like he did to me – and goes forward, throws his combinations, I think Anthony will pull out the victory.”
Joshua would avenge his defeat by Ruiz Jr. with a TKO victory in Saudi Arabia later in 2019, and the latter is set to return to action against former title contender Chris Arreola next month.
While Ruiz Jr. is optimistic about his old rival’s chances against Fury, legendary trainer Teddy Atlas has warned Joshua could suffer “blackout” in the mega-fight.
“I’m going to say he’s been to dark places when he got stopped by Ruiz. He being Joshua. He went to dark places,” he said on The Fight with Teddy Atlas podcast.
“Now he found a light and he lit the room up and he’s back into a place that’s lit. I just don’t think he’s that far away from a power shortage.
“I think there could be a blackout again, where his confidence [goes]. When I say the electricity, the light, I attach it to confidence, belief, mental strength and durability.
“I think that a blackout could happen in that generator of his again. He’s not far from removed from being taken back to no lights. So I’m going with Fury.”
