On Thursday, August 1, 2024, authorities in Borno State, Nigeria, declared a 24-hour curfew following a devastating suicide bombing in Kawuri Village, located in Konduga Local Government Area. The tragic attack resulted in the deaths of 16 individuals and left at least 20 others injured.

According to a press statement from the Nigeria Police Force, issued by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Kenneth Daso, the curfew was implemented to maintain order and ensure the safety of residents. The statement detailed that the explosion involved an improvised explosive device (IED), which caused significant casualties and damage.

The statement read:

“In view of the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security and law enforcement agencies toward preservation of law and order in the state, we regret to inform you of the tragic incident that took place in Kawuri Village. The detonation of an improvised explosive device led to the death of 16 persons, with several others critically injured and currently receiving medical care in various government hospitals across the state.”

The press release further noted that the curfew, effective immediately, was announced by Borno State’s Executive Governor, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum, in consultation with state security heads. The measure aims to restore order and prevent further incidents.

Governor Zulum’s statement emphasized the necessity of the curfew for maintaining peace and security:

“In line with our constitutional mandate towards the restoration of law and order, His Excellency the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum, in consultation with heads of security in the state, finds it expedient to declare a 24-hour curfew in the state with immediate effect. I therefore wish to call upon the good people of Borno State to remain calm and law-abiding. Further developments will be communicated to you accordingly.”
