US officials expressed growing frustration with Sudan’s warring generals and revealed that they would make a decision in the coming days, in consultation with their partners, regarding the next steps for mediation efforts. Despite offering an alternative path that avoids violence or military dominance, the officials noted that the generals have not fully embraced this option.

The United States is currently collaborating with Saudi Arabia, as well as other Arab and African states, to determine the way forward and intends to present a recommended approach soon. Recent ceasefires have collapsed, prompting warnings from the United States and Saudi Arabia about the potential suspension of mediation efforts.

The ongoing violence between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, along with their refusal to integrate into the civilian rule transition plan, has resulted in a significant number of casualties and displaced individuals. In response, Saudi Arabia has announced an international conference to gather aid pledges for Sudan, while the United States has utilized sanctions and other measures to apply pressure on Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, now rival, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
