Silvio Berlusconi, the 86-year-old billionaire media tycoon, and former Italian Prime Minister have been admitted to the intensive care unit at Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital.

Berlusconi, who has served as prime minister four times, has been in poor health in recent years, suffering from repeated bouts of illness.

He was released from the hospital just last week but was admitted again on Wednesday due to an unresolved infection. His current condition is reported as stable, and he can speak.

Berlusconi had heart surgery in 2016, battled prostate cancer, and contracted COVID-19 in 2020, leading to several hospital admissions. Although his Forza Italia party is part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing coalition, he does not have a role in her government.

Berlusconi made his fortune in television channels before entering politics. He stepped down as prime minister for the last time in 2011 amidst Italy’s financial crisis and scandals. In September, he was returned to the Senate of the Italian parliament, and in January 2022, he withdrew his name from consideration to be Italy’s president.

Berlusconi has recently criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, causing tensions with Meloni. In February, an Italian court acquitted Berlusconi of allegations of paying witnesses to lie in an underage prostitution case that had plagued him for over a decade.
