Frank Lampard Angry at Players Over Defeat to Wolves
An angry Frank Lampard criticised Chelsea’s lacklustre performance after the side’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves and accused his players of believing their own hype and getting complacent as a result of their impressive unbeaten streak.
Olivier Giroud gave the Blues the lead with a smart volley just after half-time at Molineux but Daniel Podence levelled in the 66th minute and Pedro Neto’s late strike on the counter-attack secured the hosts all three points.
It’s the first time fifth-placed Chelsea have lost back-to-back games this season and Lampard cut a frustrated figure on the touchline and in his gloomy post-match interview.
Asked how disappointed he was to come away from the match with nothing, Lampard told Amazon Prime Video: ‘Yeah, very.
‘At 1-0 we should see the game out.’ Pressed on whether he saw enough from his players after going ahead, Lampard responded :’No and not just pushing on for a second, but if you’re not playing that well – which we weren’t tonight – then hang on to 1-0. ‘Play and control the game, don’t allow counter-attacks and we did.’
Lampard suggested his players may have got complacent after their impressive 14-match unbeaten streak in all competitions stretching from October to December.
On what had changed, Lampard simply replied: ‘Performance. ‘Performance is what gives you results and we were playing very well, long unbeaten run, and then maybe the lads think we’re playing well.
‘And the minute you think you’re playing well, things like this can happen.’
