Paul Pogba owned up to his ‘stupid mistake’ made in his last outing and acknowledged the defensive frailties in his game.

The Frenchman conceded the penalty which sealed Manchester United’s 1-0 home loss to Arsenal.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang stepped up to convert the spot-kick as the Red Devils’ domestic woes at Old Trafford continued.

The Gunners dominated proceedings throughout and managed to keep both Pogba and Bruno Fernandes quiet.

While United fans went easy on the Portuguese maestro given his incredible form since joining the club, Pogba wasn’t afforded the same luxury.

However, supporters may go easier on the World Cup winner once they see his post-match interview with BBC Sport.

When asked if he knew immediately that he had given away a penalty, Pogba replied: ‘I knew it was in the box and I knew it would be a mistake.’

‘At the end I said “I am in the box and I shouldn’t give a penalty away. Just let him take the ball and try block the cross”.

‘Maybe I was a bit out of breath because I was running before and that made me do this stupid mistake.’

‘I’m not the best defensively in the box and I have to work on this. We can always improve. I can always improve on that and do better.’
