A shocked Regina King took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress In a Limited Series or Movie for her role in American Crime. The Hollywood veteran played a Muslim woman fighting to get her brother out of jail in the drama mini-series, created by 12 Years a Slave writer and Oscar winner John Ridley.

After thanking her agents, producers and other key players, King shifted her attention to her date for the night, her son. “The fact that I get to share this night with you, the best date in the house…being a mother is my greatest accomplishment,” she said.

King beat out Angela Bassett, Bessie star Mo’Nique, Zoe Kazan, Kathy Bates and Sarah Paulson for the honor.
