In a recent statement issued to the press, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has confirmed an attempted compromise of its website but reassured customers that their data remains secure. The statement, released on Thursday in Lagos, addressed growing concerns following a temporary disruption of the bank’s online services.

According to the bank, the attempted hacking incident occurred on Wednesday, coinciding with the bank’s renewal of its domain name. This incident led to a brief interruption in access to online banking services, which stirred fears among customers and media reports suggesting a possible security breach.

“Reports have surfaced alleging that hackers managed to clone our website and intercept customer data,” GTBank’s statement read. “We want to assure everyone that these claims are unfounded. The hacking attempt was unsuccessful, and no customer data has been compromised.”

The bank clarified that its website does not store customer information, which mitigates any risk of data theft from this incident. The security breach was limited to an isolated attempt to compromise the website’s domain settings, and the bank’s IT security experts are diligently working to resolve the issue and restore normalcy.

GTBank emphasized its commitment to robust security measures and urged customers to disregard misleading media claims. “Our priority remains the security of our customers’ information. We are reinforcing our security protocols to prevent future incidents and to ensure our services continue to meet the highest standards of safety and reliability,” the bank stated.

The incident has been a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity in protecting financial institutions and their clients. GTBank’s swift response and transparent communication have been pivotal in managing the situation and maintaining customer trust.
